The Cats of Parliament Hill

Apparently cats can be political, too. On a walk around Parliament Hill yesterday, I can across this little kitty complex. The sign above describes how this place was built to take care of the stray cats who were already living here. They are neutered, fed and sheltered with this cute home insulated with hay and straw. The cats seemed not to mind their squirrel neighbours skitting around them, or the onlookers (us) from the other side of the fence. There is even a little box where you can add donations to help care for the little guys. What a cute, fuzzy, and pleasant surprise in what can feel like such a cold spot full of serious, professional politicians and government workers who don't seem to know that black isn't the only colour of clothes out there.

I wonder if the cats have names like Stephen Harper, or Mulrooney or maybe even Sheila Copps.

The Whole Neighbourhood on my Back Porch

As I was drinking my morning coffee today, I looked out the window only to see something moving in the trees. At first I thought it was a squirrel, but it was too big. A racoon? Upon closer look, I realized it was a cat! What a a beauty.

While I was outside snapping photos of Charcoal, I spotted this guy down below. He saw me, meowed, and ran up the stairs to meet me. I will call him Smudgy, because of his nose.

I went back inside. Minutes later this cutie comes running up to the deck.

I go get the reluctant Peter-Banjo, my new cat, to come and meet The Fuzz.

They exchange greetings. The Fuzz asked to come inside. Peter-Banjo was a little unsure and said nothing. He was content to be on this side of the glass.

Now to introduce lil' Jack 'Oprah' Young. He is about 7 months old and loves to sit on computers. Lil Jack also likes to chase red glittery balls and hide them in places big people can't see. Then he will wait 2.5 months to pull it out of his hiding spot and surprise you like you have just seen a ghost. This is not a joke. He has a miraculous gift of being especially talented when playing fetch. Oh, and he also likes to attack the drawstring on your sweatpants while you are wearing them.

Sabine (grey) & Griffin (black) are sister and brother. They belong to a kid I babysit for. If it wasn't for the fact that they frequently use the couch as a litter box, I would say they are great cats.

When Sabine goes outside she never hesitates to hiss a couple of times, perhaps to scare away any possible danger. Once the coast is clear, she jumps up on the window sill, stares inside the house, and will start meowing shortly after to come back in. She gets very cuddly when she comes inside, and likes to sit on the keyboard and purr, or on your papers, or at best, on your lap. She does that paw-curl-nails-out-stretchy-thing when you pet her. I couldn't stand it the other day because she kept doing it to my very ticklish knees.

Griffin is the poopsmith of the two, the reason the couch has become a pooping ground. He is always content, and is very submissive to being picked up. He's been missing for a few days, since we let him out on Monday.

Jimmy here lives in the Annex. One afternoon I was rushing home and spotted him. Even though I was strapped for time, I couldn't resist a connection with a neighbourhood friend. His meow made me want to scoop him up and take him home with me. He followed me for a bit, then hid behind a blue garbage bin, peered out from it and watched me walk away.

Newsday has video of the rescue operation to remove 180-200 cats from one home in Moriches, Long Island. Apparently rescue group Rescue Ink got a tip about the house and the homeowner (who believes there are more like 100 cats) agreed to give up the cats.

The cats are being inoculated first, then taken to centers for spaying and neutering, and finally will go to no-kill shelters in Long Island and NYC where they can be adopted. The entire process is expected to take weeks, if not months.

A neighbor told Newsday the cats haven't been a bother, but, "The odor, yes. Hopefully, the cats will get the help they need." You can contact Rescue Ink at 800-510-7355 or info@rescueink.org for information on adopting the cats.

A few walks ago, I made friends with a little black and white cat on Agricola. Let's call her Nora. If she's a he, then he would be Nordberg. But Nora it is for now.

Tonight, Nora followed my friend and I all the way home. She meowed like a yodeler by the time she'd followed me all the way to my street.

It was sad, because it's cold outside tonight, and she's so far from her home. I couldn't take her inside because maybe she'd like it and never go back home to her mum.

They enjoy the plasticy feeling of Astro-turf on their furry bellies, and pretending they are the fresh produce on display in a backyard convenience store. Flower shop: Please do not disturb the cats

I walked from work (42nd and 9th) to church (22nd and 9th) last night, passing on the way, among other things, a belly-dancer and this cat. I guess the flower/plant shop took in some strays, or otherwise has a soft spot for kitties. Everyone had gone home except the cat. You can see part of the note in the window -- "Please do not disturb the cats while they are sleeping by knocking on the glass. Cats can be adopted at..."

They must sleep in the window often.

This cat was a stray, according the innkeeper. I had to go to Newport, Rhode Island to find a cat. (Boston has become a total dog town.)

Finding a cat to photograph was not the reason for the visit, but I digress...

Since he (?*) was a stray, there was no collar. I will call him Bliss, since that was the name of the inn, and because he was an exceedingly happy cat, and so smiley that his eyes never seemed to be able to open. I wondered at first if he could even see, but every time the door opened, he would peer indoors longingly (implying that he can see). The innkeeper said he needs to stay outside, but this cat often tries (and sometimes succeeds) to get inside.

We saw this cat many times during our visit. He was always very friendly and liked to follow us around, purr, and roll on his back.

Star of the show

There have not been too many new cats around lately. I saw Wallace a few times last week. He's meek and mild as ever. He always seems kind of sad to me. I want to take him home, give him a bath, and feed him high quality cat food. I saw an orange cat that might have been Duke, but I'm not sure. If he wasn't, I would have named him Harvard and told the long story of how he assumed the pseudonym when his owners moved from Boston to Halifax, much against Harvard's will and to his chagrin. You see, Harvard was well on his way to receiving one of the highest orders of education in kittydom, the Masters of Mousing and Being Cute (M.MBC), until he was forced to leave. He was atteneing the lesser-known Cat College, which occupies a small corner of the Harvard campus in Cambridge. In spite of the high concentration of human higher learning institutions in Halifax, there are presently no feline equivalents one might find in larger centres.

Anyway, Nina (shown above) is still cute as ever, and I am happy to post yet another picture of her. She's discovered the top of the kitchen table, where she often jumps up to watch me eat or drink my coffee. She also has adapted a strange habit of dragging old rags and dryer lint from the wastebin to the edge of her poop box.

There's a new poopsmith in town.

He's still little but he's got spunk. At night he climbs the ladder to my loft, turns on the purr engine, and nuzzles his face against mine.

His favorite activities include beating the shit out of socks, beating the shit out of Holland Bear, beating the shit out of wine corks, and pooping.

I've named him Pasha Strelnikov, and if you know what book that is from, you get extra points. But mostly, we call him "Kitten."

I met a cat named Napoleon (his name for real), who was reclining on Quinpool Road near Robie Street. To those who don't know Halifax, this is a busy area with no private house frontages. I suspect Napoleon may be a castaway, but it's hard to say. Anyway, he and I made good friends, and he followed me (by walking ahead of me as though he didn't care that I was leaving). Just when I thought he'd veered off into the dark, I tripped on something—Napoleon, who was apparently trying to stop me from keeping on. I gave him one more friendly pat and walked on.

Napoleon has short black hair with a white spot on his neck under his chin, and a white belly.

This cat lives on the corner of Creighton and Falkland. I used to remember it's name but now i forget it. So, we shall call him Gulliver. I often see him walking along this so called cat walk (pun intended) in the early evening. Gulliver always seems content with simply sitting on the ledge, that seems as if it were made for him. He gets to parade himself to the neighbors and then can let himself back into his second floor apartment.

Here is Duarte. Duarte (a Portuguese name meaning "guard") lives in a hardware store in Little Portugal. Duarte is almost too cute for words. He spends his time helping the store owner with merchandising, working on store displays, accounting, and catching the odd mouse. I had to sneak this shot because the owner was on the other side of this window. She probably saw me taking the shot, but I didn't care, because I'm long overdue for a cat post. Larry, who is likely a girl, but nonetheless looks like a Larry to me (maybe it's short for Larissa), saw me getting ready to take the shot and curiously walked over to me from the far side of the window. Sometimes you have to settle for pictures of cats rather than real ones. These cat mugs caught my eye on my way home last night; the cats have names (a la RTF) and are captioned. This one says, "My whole family's big-boned".

Also, in Williamsburg near LL's current but almost former house, this kitty caught my eye. Perhaps this is Justin Broadbent's home, or LL's theory is that the cat died, but the owners still wanted to see a friendly face in the window.

Monkey is on the prowl

This is Monkey. He spends four months of each year living on an island at Manitoba Pioneer Camp. Monkey is the Program Director's cat. I think Monkey believes he is the director. He gives most people attitude, but if you're nice to him (and he's hungry), he'll come near and roll around on the ground.

He is known for keeping the mouse population under control, senselessly killing bats and bunnies, and for his kitty dreads. These formulate on his back near his tail. He's simply too fat to clean there properly. You'd think all the exercise of camp would keep his wieght down, but I'm sure he spends more time lazing around in the sun on the porch than he does swimming or canoeing.

Most camp folk do not like Monkey. This photo was taken by Alli and Jordan, two campers who are obsessed with him. They laughed at the formation of his left paw in this photo and wonder about him. I laughed at his eyes. Check out the intense stare. Monkey is on the prowl!

My personal feelings about Monkey: he's a cat, so of course I like him. I enjoy when he rolls on the ground in front of me and gets pine needles, twigs, and dirt stuck in his fur. It's funny. I don't enjoy his kitty dreads. A little while ago someone shaved them off and left a square clearing on his back. I prefer to pet Monkey with a stick.

Here's Duke. He might be any of the orange cats in the 'hood, but his face seems unfamiliar to me. So Duke it is. He's a real handsome feline, but he's a bit on the skittish side. I coaxed him from under the Saturn, but when my lens made a whirr sound, he sauntered away, across the street.

I never mentioned how much I love the way cats scuttle across streets, their long bodies holding almost still while their four little chopstick legs move like scissors to propel them swiftly to the other side. The kitty-scuttle is just another reason why I am coo-coo for kitty-cats.

Lost CAT!

This is a poster for the lost cat "Mica". She is supposed to live on Gottingen. She is lost and all alone.

This is Wu Tang. I saw him right after i read the "LOST" poster for Mica and let me tell you, i thought i was going to be making Nancy's (see poster) day, by having found her cat. But no. Wu Tang was not Mica and i was not going to be able to reunite the separated siamese to her human mother.

p.s. Wu tang is the name of the cat as indicated on its tag. I did not name it. If i had it would have been Andy.

Subway man + cat + kittens: West 4 station

On the way home last night LL and I saw this man and his three cats (two little kittens and one possible-momma cat) in the subway entrance.

I asked if I could take his (and cats') picture and he kindly said yes. And he told me how calico cats (the one that looks like my baby kitten, right by the man's blue shoe) are always girl cats (all the kittens in my kitten's litter were calico, and all were girls), and I told him how orange stripey cats are almost always boy cats.

It's amazing that the cats stay with him and don't just run off into the night; I wonder how he gets around with them all without losing them.

Harris = Chicken?

Unfortunately, those "lost cat" posters for Chicken are still up. There is one of those posters on the screen door of a house on Bauer, which probably means that's where Chicken should be but is not. But I did see one colour lost cat poster for Chicken, and Chicken is a marmalade cat like the one I at first thought was Sampson but later named Harris.

So maybe Harris is Chicken? If I see him again and it turns out he is Chicken, I'll return him to his house on Bauer.

This is Midnight Mindy.

She lives on Agricola Street. I was riding my bike and upon seeing Mindy I swerved to the opposite side of the rode to capture several night shots of this lovely lady. It was hot out that night and she found herself a cool cement block upon which to lay and watch the traffic and pedestrians. She was, as we like to say, people watching.

This is Honey. The type that comes in jars and sticks to spoons. I found her at dusk, outside of her yellow house with the red decorative. She was the type to roll in the gutters and get herself all dirty with pebbles and sand and grass. But I am sure to her, the amount of cleaning that she would have to do later that evening was worth it for the loving attention she received.

Ok this is the worst picture in the world, but you'll get an idea. You'll just have to come to New York for the real thing.

This cat is called Nick. He sits on his owner's head to help his owner make money. Even when his owner walks around, Nick still sits there. If he gets taken off his owner's head, he'll climb back up there ("Go upstairs, Nick").

Window Cat on Maynard

It's an inadequate shot, I know, but here is one of two furry cats I see in this window on Maynard Street. They are very contented cats and seem to enjoy this perch. Whenever I go by to take a photo, however, they are not there—or their owners are home as is indicated by the sounds of their voices coming from within. It would be a bit awkward to take a photo of their window while they are in there.

I suppose I'll have to start looking elsewhere for neighbourhood kitties—I seem to have exhausted my supply here for now.

Meet Simon. He is a very friendly gentleman who i first meet while he was sitting on the steps of his house. I stopped at first just to take a picture, but soon i realized that there is more to Simon. Not only is he handsome (and single ladies), but he has extra digits. That's right Simon is polydactyl. So if your looking for a good time with a pleasant and loving male, Simon might be the one for you! Swing by to the corner of Bauer and Cogswell and just say 'hello'.

Walking up the 45-degree incline that is Beacon Hill after a jaunt at the hardware store, my hubby and I spotted these two cats.

Maybe they are siblings. (One was sitting on the sidewalk, and one was lazing in the window. But they weren't interacting at all.) At any rate, they live on stately Mt. Vernon Street at a ritzy-looking residence, so they are probably rich felines. I will call them Grey Poupon and Cashmere.

I crossed the street to visit with Cashmere. He was feeling a bit shy, so he went into the little garden and sat just beneath a big leaf. I talked to him and tried to get him to look at me, but I wasn't cool enough to be his friend.

I like him anyway. And Grey Poupon, too.

Nina: Spongepaw

This is Nina, who lives at my house. I think she's mine, but she might be Marie-Hélène's, who placed Nina under my care when she moved back to Québec—and who may come back to take her home. I hope not.

Here is one of the cute little monkey things that Nina does (see picture). If there is a little jar or cup of water, and if she's thirsty, she doesn't let the fact that her head wouldn't fit into the opening stop her. She simply dips her furry paw in the water like a sponge and laps it up from there! It's so cute, except when she does it with my dirty paint/ink water.

Sampson?

I saw this guy on Maynard Street, and I think he might be Charley's Sampson. He was so nice and friendly; when I squatted down to call him over, he meowed and trotted over and again, and we became good friends whilst bonding over a hearty scruff-scratch.

Update: Charley speculates that this couldn't be Sampson. I've decided that this guy's name is Harris. Harris Bonaventure.

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo lives across the street from me in one of the many tall/skinny Dutch townhouses in my 'hood. He usually goes in and out through a basement window, but often when I come home he is stuck outside. He looks at me expectantly, but then dashes off when I come too close.

Juliet lives next door, and I've never seen her outside. This morning Romeo was in his usual spot by the bike rack, and he was miaowing to Julie, jumping on and off the window sill, trying to get to his girl behind the window. Then Julie's mom came and clapped Romeo away, but he lingered under a car, eyeing me with suspicion, waiting for a second try.

W 113th St, Manhattan (unusual)

On my way home last night I actually saw a cat on the street in Manhattan! Poor kitten (she looked about 6 months old), she had no tags, was VERY skittish, but also friendly; I stopped for a while to talk to her and by the time I tried to walk home I almost couldn't because she was winding herself between my legs.

Really hard to take a photo of though since she moved so fast and the light was low AND it's just my phone camera.

I thought about taking her home because no cat should really be wandering around Manhattan alone, but my house is so inhospitable to cats right now that I've moved my baby kitten to the office. So I didn't.

But then, this morning on the way to the subway I saw this:

So I guess she'll be ok for now. (I'm not good at naming like Tom is, maybe he will name this little one?)
